OUR BEDTIME STORY (THUS FAR)

The Deviant Playground was born in April 2007 to two very proud parents, Kel & Naked Mike. They were unsure whether their little DP would walk on its own or fall flat, but it proved to be a huge success at Burning Man 2007. DP Camp received the honor of plaza placement and kept the inhabitants of the 4:30 plaza well hydrated with spiked lemonade and freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.

Planning for BM2008 took us to the snowy mountains of Colorado where we rented a cabin, played in the hot tub and wreaked havoc on the generally quiet town of Nederland. We occupied the portal position in the 9:00 plaza where we had daily recess, the Franken-Animal Lab, and Coloring & Cocktails. Our playground featured a see-saw, The Schwing, a climbing dome and a trampoline. Camp was usually bustling as burners made their way to the 9:00 plaza for pancakes from Pancake Playhouse, ice from Arctica, and spiked lemonade with us.

Deviant Playgrounders holed up in a beach house in Pensacola, Florida plotting and planning for BM2009. We jotted down grand ideas, spent quality time with vodka and participated in Pensacola’s Mardi Gras (where we dressed up in true burner style much to the surprise of Pensacola residents). Our final planning meeting for the year landed us in the Pacific Northwest. We schemed on a farm in Kingston, Washington surround by horses and a pregnant goat. It was a very productive meeting although we could not convince the goat to give birth while we were there. We could be found at 4:30 and Adapt with a St. Andrews See-Saw, a climbing rope, giant swing, trampoline. We were a bit smushed together but we made the best of a tight situation. Camp was usually packed thanks to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Body Painting, and the ever-popular Make-Your-Own-Dildo workshop. In keeping with the spirit of our theme, we kept the citizens of Black Rock plied with special kool-aid.

For 2010, we’re planning to have a bigger and better playground. Look for the St. Andrews See-Saw, a climbing dome, a climbing rope, a swing, the trampoline, and other equipment that has yet to be determined. We’ll also be repeating the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Coloring & Cocktails and the Franken-Animal Lab. There may even be a stuffed animal sex show! As of early February, we’re nearly full for 2010 so our little community continues to flourish and grow.

Our goal as a camp is to create an environment where adults can unleash the creativity and playfulness we all possessed as children. Childhood whimsy can be difficult to find once you reach the big bad world so we decided to create a place where you can rediscover the joys of being free-thinking, free-willed, and of age to consume spirit-enhanced bug juice.
